Proclamation Ceremony for 『City of Lifelong Study』

Gyeongju-si was selected as 『City of Lifelong Study』 by the Ministry of Education in July 2013 and held proclamation ceremony for City of Lifelong Study at Seorabeol Culture Center on November 27, 2013. On that day, Gyeongju-si reported the process of being selected as a City of Lifelong Study, displayed the video on lifelong activities in a while, and presented certificate of meritorious service to the people of merit who contributed to the City of Lifelong Study selection.
As an educational city with Silla Gukhak (institution of higher learning in the Silla period), the first educational institution of Korea which was established 1331 years ago, Gyeongju-si has been providing various opportunities to learn whenever and wherever the citizens want through enacting the ordinance for promoting lifelong education in 2008, organizing the Lifelong Education Association, establishing the Lifelong Educator's Association which was the first in the nation, recruiting the first lifelong educator in the local government, designating the first lifelong senior citizen center in the nation, and holding other programs such as Hwabaek Forum with invitation of the best celebrity twice a month, visiting the Happiness Academy monthly, Rich Choe Academy which teaches the management philosophy of Choe Family practicing noblesse obligingly for 300 years, making a lifelong study village, and training the educationists for enhancing the creativeness of talented students, MICE coordinator and cultural guide.
Also, an ordinance for assistance on educational expenditure from Gyeongju-si was amended in 2010 to train the local students into globally talented people with creativity and personality, and a standard amount of assistance on educational expenditure was increased to 5% which used to be 3% of the market price in the year before last--supported 2,300 million KRW in 2010, 4,600 million KRW in 2011, 5,100 million KRW in 2012, and 6,200 million KRW in this year to improve the environment of education by establishing All-day Care in Mommy's Arms, After School Care Classroom, supplemental activity cost for academic improvement, specialization program and an English experience class.
Especially in 2014, free school lunches for all elementary school students in Gyeongju-si area will be implemented by maintaining the support for school lunch in elementary and middle schools throughout the rural area and expanding it to the elementary schools in various Dongs (administrative districts in Korea), and agreement on residence hall for local students will be concluded and 300 million KRW will be invested in Kyungpook National University, Yeungnam University, Daegu University and additionally Keimyung University. With this agreement, 30 students from Gyeongju area in each university can live in the residence hall and lessen the burden on household budget.
Now, Gyeongju-si has been reborn into the representative city of lifelong study in Korea and will do its best for the citizens to achieve a happy dream through lifelong study.
